The Temple of the Graces is the foremost religious institution in Meereen, a city of many-colored brick pyramids and ancient Ghiscari traditions. Dedicated to the gods of Ghis, the temple is presided over by the Green Grace, Galazza Galare, a priestess whose wisdom and political influence make her a key figure in Daenerys Targaryen's court. The temple's authority is woven into the fabric of Meereenese life, from the rituals of marriage to the burial of the dead, and its golden domes are a landmark visible from the queen's terrace atop the Great Pyramid.

Rituals and Ceremonies

The Temple of the Graces is the stage for Meereen's most significant public ceremonies. It is here that Daenerys Targaryen marries Hizdahr zo Loraq, a union meant to reconcile the city to her rule. The wedding is conducted according to Ghiscari rites, with the Green Grace officiating. The ceremony includes the washing of the queen's feet, a traditional act of humility, and the binding of the couple with chains of yellow gold. The temple is also where the bones of the child Hazzea, killed by Drogon, are laid to rest, with a hundred candles burning in her memory. The Green Grace leads prayers for peace and for the city's deliverance from the pale mare, the bloody flux that ravages the Astapori refugees camped outside Meereen's walls.

Political and Spiritual Authority

The Green Grace, Galazza Galare, is the temple's high priestess and a powerful voice in Meereen's politics. She urges Daenerys to marry Hizdahr zo Loraq, arguing that a king of pure Ghiscari blood can reconcile the city to her rule. She also advocates for the reopening of the fighting pits, presenting them as a religious sacrifice to the gods of Ghis. The temple's authority is not absolute, however. Daenerys resists the Green Grace's counsel on the pits and on the examination of her womb before marriage. The temple's influence is further eroded by the Sons of the Harpy, who murder freedmen and leave their mark in blood, and by the plague that spreads despite the Graces' prayers.

The Temple's Role in Crisis

As the siege of Meereen tightens and the pale mare spreads, the Temple of the Graces becomes a site of both hope and despair. The Blue Graces tend to the sick, but many of them fall ill themselves. The Green Grace serves as an envoy to the Yunkish commanders, but her efforts to secure the release of hostages fail. The temple's rituals, once a source of stability, now seem hollow. Daenerys, increasingly isolated, finds herself questioning the value of the peace she has bought. The temple, with its golden domes and ancient traditions, stands as a symbol of a city that resists change, even as it crumbles under the weight of war and disease.
